Week 1 of our Quarantine Film section featured three very different films from the UK and Canada. We started the festival with the very first submission we received, a short fiction film "ABYSS" by Max Roach, a short film he made as a one person crew (and cast). The second film we featured was "My One True Love" by Emma Pitt, a heartbreaking short about the effects of lockdown on a specific family dynamic (being vague here to avoid spoilers!). Finally, our third featured film was "COVIDays" by Alexander Greenberg, a short observational documentary he made in Vancouver during lockdown.
ABYSS - Max Roach
"I always try to make my films personal therefore I feel like I'm more related to the work I make, playing with creativity to shape this story into a final product while keeping the integrity of the message was a challenge but a fun one. I love seeing how people manipulate cinema in a way that shows how they feel or what they want to say so I thought I would apply the same principle to this piece. I think having an ambiguous ending is always something I enjoy. I think when a film presents more questions than answers the audience gets more invested into the story and where it goes. I hope you enjoy the film, it was a brilliant experience to make and I can’t wait to share it with you."

"My One True Love" - Emma Pitt
"I'm a UK based writer and filmmaker. I graduated with a Distinction from the TV Scriptwriting MA at De Montfort University and I'm repped by Rebecca Watson at Valerie Hoskins Associates. I have a number TV projects in development and I have also written for both stage and radio. My short horror film 'The Ballad of a Haunted Man' has been screened across the world and won a number of awards, and I also have another film 'The Boy Who Thought He Could Fly', on the festival circuit which is a family drama centred around bereavement. I wrote My One True Love for the BBC Writersroom InterConnected opportunity, the brief being a video call between 2-4 people. My script was longlisted to the final 50 out of 6803 but when it wasn't selected, myself and Dan Shoring who co-produced my other films, decided to make it. We weren't sure how or even if it would work, but we had such an excellent cast in Sheila Reid and Lisa Stevenson that the beautiful simplicity of the filming process finished off with Dave's Sutherland's melodic song, created something really authentic that we are incredibly proud of. "COVIDays" - Alexander Greenberg
"I am a visual effects compositor from Vancouver, BC and a hobby filmmaker. While being at home after being laid off to COVID-19, I took my camera one morning and just went around my beautiful city to capture the views under the quarantine." Alexander is on Vimeo https://vimeo.com/alexandervfx
